To conserve his legacy as both a human rights activist and leader of post-apartheid South Africa, a multitude of coins have been minted in South Africa and internationally to honour South Africa´s icon and ex president Nelson Mandela. All coins depicting his activities, achievements or personality are included in this series.
South Africa´s first 24 carat (Au 999.9) Gold coin series was struck in 1994 and depicts South Africa´s rich natural heritage of flora and fauna. The Natura series has been established as the most renowned proof coin series of modern times and has won numerous international awards. Beginning in 1994, with the "Big Five" theme (1994-1998), the SA Mint subsequently produced the "Monarchs of Africa" theme (1999-2001), followed by the "Wild Cats of Africa" theme (2002-2004). Since then the "Giants of Africa" (2005-2008) featuring the hippopotamus, and the "Safari through Africa" (2009-2010) themes have contributed in making the Natura series among the leading coins for both nature lovers and coin collectors.
Following the popular paleontological theme(1998-2001), the SA Mint had chosen "World Heritage Sites" as the theme for their 24 carat R2 Gold Quarter ounce series. Starting in 2002, with the launch of the Robben Island commemorative coin, 8 coins depicting the beauty and splendour of South Africa´s World Heritage Sites (As listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list) were produced (2002-2009)
The popular 24 carat tenth oz of Gold, commonly referred to as the Cultural Series, depicts the indigenous tribes of South Africa. A series of 10 cultural coins over the years 1998-2007 were created.
