The 2008 Krugerrand was launched in the Kruger National Park (KNP) as part of the Park’s 110th anniversary (1898 - 2008). Both the Krugerrand and the Kruger National Park have their roots deeply embedded in the vision of one man.
Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger (1825- 1904) was an enigmatic leader — an intriguing mixture of stubbornness, compassion, conservatism and pragmatism all rolled into one. Elected as President of the ZAR (Zuid Afrikaanshe Republiek) for four successions until his exile in 1901 during the Anglo Boer War, he proved to be a leader of vision when the Boer Republic needed ¡t most.
Two of Kruger’s visions have played a major role ¡n South African history. One was the need for the Boer Republiek’s own currency and the other was to proclaim a small “Government Reserve” in the eastern Lowveld to protect and preserve the dwindling herds of wildlife. Both these visions must have challenged Kruger’s character to the limit as the Volksraad (government members) took many years to convince.
The Krugerrand ¡s based on the ZAR’s first currency the Kruger Pond. The image of President Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand was first struck with the original tooling that was used ¡n 1892 for the Kruger half-crown coins. The reverse of the Krugerrand was designed and engraved by the famous South African sculptor, CL Steynberg who also sculptured the large granite statue of Paul Kruger at the Skukuza entrance of the Kruger National Park.
This special limited edition Krugerrand Launch Set commemorates the KNP’s anniversary celebration and consists of a 1 oz (22 carat gold Krugerrand with the mintmark "110 Years KNP" and a 1 oz (sterling silver) commemorative medallion. CL Steynberg modelled the reverse of the medallion which depicts the large granite statue of Paul Kruger which he created. The obverse depicts the logo of the South African National Parks. The coin and the medallion are packaged in a unique wooden display box.
