More details

The first legal tender 22 carat gold coin without a denomination but linked to the daily gold price - the Krugerrand - was struck at the South African Mint on 3 July 1967. This concept was so successful that other countries have adopted this model. Fractional Krugerrands were launched in 1980.

The Krugerrand obverse features one of South Africa's great statesmen, President Paul Kruger of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR). Born in the Cape in 1825, Kruger's family moved up-country with the Voortrekkers where a small Boer republic was formed. When the British annexed this Republic in 1877, Kruger took a strong leading role in the struggle against British imperialism, becoming President at an extraordinary time of gold discoveries and ever increasing clashes with the British.

The graceful Springbok on the reverse is one of South Africa's most recognized national symbols and a reminder of the young ZAR Republic when springbok herds, numbered in their thousands, were a common sight. When treasure seekers flocked to South Africa in the 1800's, wildlife was severely threatened due to increased hunting. Also an idealistic conservationist, Kruger requested an area be demarcated for their safety. This world renowned Kruger National Park celebrates its 110 anniversary in 2008.
