The South African Mint proudly honours “The Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela” with the legal tender Protea coin series. Nelson Mandela’s childhood and his love for children is the first theme to be portrayed in this series.
He was born Rolihlahla Mandela on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo in the Transkei (today Eastern Cape). His father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Henry was the chief of Mvezo and a highly respected counsellor to the regent of the Thembu tribe. His mother, Noqaphi Nosekeni, was one of the Chief’s four wives.
Following a dispute with the local magistrate, his father was stripped of his chieftainship and as result lost both his fortune and title, the family moved to the smaller rural village of Qunu. Aspects of Mandela’s boyhood are featured on the reverse of the pure gold R25 (1oz) Protea coin, with a quote:
‘…it was in that village near Umtata that I spent the happiest years of my boyhood and whence I trace my earliest memories” (Autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom)
The obverse depicts Nelson Mandela wearing an iconic Madiba shirt, together with South Africa’s national flower the King Protea.
