Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been honouring men and women from all corners of the globe for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and for working in peace.
This 3 coin (2 gold, 1 silver) set commemorates the awarding of the prize to Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk for their joint efforts at a peaceful transition of South Africa toward a democratic country.
The reverse of the Protea R25 (1 oz) gold coin depicts both Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk. The Nobel Peace Prize for 1993 was jointly awarded to these two South African leaders in recognition of their efforts and as a pledge of support for the forces of good, in the hope that the advance towards equality and democracy would reach its goal in the very near future. This became a reality in 1994 with the formation of the first democratic South Africa.
When Nelson Mandela bade farewell to Parliament five years after he was sworn in as South Africa's first democratically elected President, he urged South Africans never to forget their past, but to use it as a tool in overcoming the challenges still facing the country. FW de Klerk, who retired from politics in 1991, praised all South Africans for their role in bringing about change in the country, asking them to join hands for further socio-economic transformation, saying the challenges were still huge.
On the common obverse, a King Protea, the words "South Africa" and the year "2001" are featured.
The set also contains a one ounce gold medallion featuring Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Peace Prize as well as a one ounce silver medallion featuring the Peace Prize Winners NR Mandela and FW de Klerk.
