Despite the highly successful "Save the Rhino" projects in the past, alarming increase in the number of poaching incidences of both White and Black Rhinoceros have been reported in southern Africa in recent years! The EWT has initiated the "Strengthening the Security of the Rhino in South Africa" project to improve the protection of southern Africa’s rhinos.
This project helps with training workshops of management and anti-poaching personnel and facilitates communication, information sharing and networking between the relevant stakeholders. It also manages a national database for monitoring the status of the rhino population.
The reverse of the quarter oz gold coin depicts a male and a female rhinoceros walking inside the outline in the field.
On the obverse of the R20 Natura coin the silhouette of the rhino represents bygone days when vast numbers of rhinos inhabited the African continent. The South African Mint Company contributes towards this project to ensure that the Rhinoceros survives in southern Africa for future generations.
