Multi international award winning series, the Natura, has become one of the South African Mint's most sought after coin series. The Natura's themes are dedicated to South Africa's wildlife and over the years, a part of the financial proceeds from the sales of special coin sets have been ploughed back into conservation to preserve endangered species.
This distinctive gold coin set contains three 1/10th oz pure gold coins which have featured in the Natura's "Nature's Families" theme from the years 2011, 2012 and 2013. The "Nature's Families" theme began in 2011 and featured the meerkat (Suricato suricatta) family. The 2012 coins featured the endangered African painted wolf (Lycaon pictus), also commonly called the African wild dog. The zebra (Equidae) concludes the "Nature's Families" theme. Visually linking the families, the obverse of all the coins in all three themes features seven animals.
Meerkats live in clans consisting of 20 to 50 members. Each member of the family plays an important role in helping the family survive. Sentry guards do duty and rotate hourly, giving the rest of the group a chance to groom and feed. They also protect the young from threats, often endangering their own lives.
The highly endangered African painted wolves live and hunt in groups called packs of approximately 10 members. The pack is usually dominated by a monogamous breeding pair whose pups are cared for by the entire pack. When returning from a successful hunt they will regurgitate meat for those that remained at the den during the hunt including the dominant female, the pups, the sick or injured, the old and infirm, and those who stayed back to guard the pups.
Zebras are very social animals and live in groups called "harems" that are made up of one stallion and several mares and their young. When a family group is attacked they form a semi-circle with the foals on the inside and face the predator together. If one of the family is injured the rest of the family will encircle it to protect it from further attack. If a member gets lost, they will attempt to find it before moving on.
