From the year 2005 to 2007, the "Nobel Peace Prize Winners" of South Africa were featured as the theme on the legal tender Protea Coin Series. Chief Albert John Luthuli was depicted in 2005 as the first South African to be awarded this honour in 1960. Archbishop Desmond Tutu was the second South African to receive the prize in 1984 and was featured in 2006. In 2007, both former Presidents of South Africa, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Mr Frederik Willem de Klerk were portrayed as they jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
The three R25 (1 oz) Protea pure gold coins issued in 2005, 2006 and 2007 are combined in this unique "Nobel Peace Prize Protea Set". Only 300 of these sets have been issued by the South African Mint Company.
