Life of a Legend — Nelson Mandela

The South African Mint is proud to portray The Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela” on the legal tender Protea coin series. A portrait of Nelson Mandela wearing an iconic Madiba shirt is featured on the common obverse together with South Africa’s national flower, the King Protea.

Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July1918, into the Mandela clan.  He was named Rolihlahla, which in Xhosa means “pulling the branch of a tree” and troublemaker”. His father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Henry was the chief of Mvezo and a highly respected counsellor to the king of the Thembu tribe. His mother, Noqaphi Nosekeni, was one of the Chief’s four wives.

Mandela’s birthplace, Mvezo, is situated in the province of Transkei (today Eastern Cape). At that time South Africa was part of the British Empire and British law overruled tribal customs. Following a dispute with the local magistrate, his father was stripped of his chieftainship. He lost both his fortune and title, and the family was forced to move north to the smaller rural village of Qunu.

As .a young child, Mandela spent most of his free time playing in the veld, gathering wild honey, swimming in streams, catching fish and fashioning animals out of clay. He looked after the sheep and caIves in the fields, and discovered the almost mystical attachment that the Xhosa have for their cattle. .

Mandela’s boyhood in Qunu is featured on the reverse of the R25 coin, with a quote: “... it was in that village near Umtata that I spent the happiest years of my boyhood and whence I trace my earliest memories”

At the age of nine he was taken to live with the regent of the Thembu people Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo, in a compound called the ‘Great Place” in the town of Mqhekezweni after his father died of a lung disease.

This arrival is portrayed on the reverse of the R1, with the quote “In that moment of beholding Jongintaba and his court I felt Iike a sapling pulled root and branch from the earth and flung into the center of a stream whose strong current I could not resist.”

Life at Mqhekezweni revolved around the regent, tribal court where chiefs and headmen came to discuss and settIe disputes, and the mission station of the Methodist church. At 16 he made the transition from boyhood to manhood in a tribal initiation ceremony, He was now formally accepted into society as a man, and allowed to marry and officiate in tribal rituals. .

The late Nelson MandeIa positively enriched the lives of thousands of children during and after his time as public figure.  The quote “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children” (Launch of the Nelson Mandela children’s fund, 8 May1995) is depicted on the R5.
