In appreciation of South Africa's innermost palaeontoIogicaI secrets the R2 fine gold coin was reintroduced in 1997. To commemorate the exciting celebration of a new millennium, the most recent discovery of international value and
consequence, is the chosen theme for this coin series: The 2000 gold R2 portrays "Little Foot".
"Little Foot" is the most complete skeleton found to date at the Sterkfontein Caves which was recently declared a World Heritage Site. Dr RJ Clark, with the help of Stephen Motsumi and Nkwane Molefe, discovered this ape-man individual. The find was catalogued as StW 573. The most complete skull and foot of an ape-man ever discovered, embedded in the breccia are depicted on the reverse of this coin.
The palaeontological gold (24 ct) coin series is for everyone interested in the mystique of time and evolution.
